The primary goal of the JPS Transportation Department is to transport students safely to and from school each day. The department is committed to maintaining a safe environment for all students while riding school buses and ensuring that the highest standards are adhered to by those who utilize JPS student transportation services. Our department is one of the largest of its type in the state of Mississippi. It has frequently received commendations from the Mississippi Department of Education and has been cited as an exemplary school district Transportation department at annual Pupil Transportation conferences. The JPS Transportation Department has approximately 350 employees serving as administrators, drivers, and mechanics. The department currently has a fleet of 246 buses and transports over 23,000 students each day. Our drivers cover about 1,863,290 miles each school year. They are the most highly trained drivers in the state. The programs we implement in our daily routine include: Boundary Planning–Updating and maintaining information relating to boundaries and the city map. Routing System–Managing over 300 routes for the school district. Each year, the department sends bus cards to parents/guardians with students' bus information. Fleet Maintenance–Managing the entire district's fleet to ensure safety as well as economic efficiency. Field Trip Management–Managing field trip requests for the district. Jackson Public Schools operates one of the largest transportation departments in the state. We safely transport over 5,000 students per day and cover a huge geographical area. It is our primary mission to serve our students and families with care and pride, from the early morning hours to late afternoon. For Transportation questions, please call 517-841-2180. Creating bus stops is an ongoing process, with the bulk of the stops assigned during the summer months. Riding a bus is a privilege not enjoyed by all of our students. There are several factors that determine the eligibility to ride the bus and where stops are located. Young 5's - 5th Grade: Students must live more than .5 miles from their home school to be eligible for transportation. 6th - 12th Grade: Students must live more than 1.5 miles from their home school to be eligible for transportation. State and Federal Regulations: There are numerous laws and regulations that govern how bus stops are assigned. This ensures that we have bus stops that are safe for our students and motorists alike. The first two weeks of school are the busiest for our Transportation Department as we continue to adjust routes and times to make sure our service is of the highest caliber. Please be patient during the first few days as we make the changes necessary to serve you and your children.
